Milagros Peña Santos was born in Digos in 1938, the third of seven children. She grew up minding her mother's small store on Rizal Avenue and reading every book that came through town, twice.
She taught Grade 4 for thirty-one years. Her former pupils still stop her children at the market to say she was the one who made them love to read.
She married Rogelio Santos in 1961. Together they raised five children in the house on Rizal Avenue, where Sunday lunch was never for fewer than twelve and there was always a plate kept warm for whoever came late.
In her later years she kept a sampaguita garden, sewed school uniforms for her grandchildren, and prayed the rosary every afternoon at four. She died at home in August 2026, with her family around her.
